Absence

Little girl, by her mother
Sips Ice Cream Soda
Through a straw

Today her father
Is elsewhere

Bars

Plums et la tomatoe
Generation through generation

A spotted dress
Drinks from my coffee cup

Pristine

You took your time, to look so good
You stole my mind, they said you would

With half a sign, the half that almost misunderstood
More than half unkind, the half that knew I no how should
We danced the line, swayed, yet somehow leaning stood
I said you're mine, pray venture, to flow deep within my blood
Time stood still, as if our place was under the rainbows hood
We cared for the thrill, spilt the rest, left unfulfilled in bluebell wood
Daylong nights took their toll, our play turned bad, we'd had it good
We departed, the drift to roll; our hopelessness started, we knew it could

You look so good, I took my time
I dreamt you would, you appear quite sublime

Flirtatious

Cockatiel & coffee cup
Steal the dreams of able
Sit there by the mirage fair
Cards laid on the table

Ace is high but draw it slow
Takes a while for love to show
Kings and Queens they stand in line
Touch their breath & pray for time

One and one is, as could never be
Mismatched beside the stable
All to hope is all can change
Witness sent by telegraph cable

Visitation

Another teatime supermarket cafe
At the end of a rainy day in Yorkshire
Should I stay or should I walk away
Who is that, sat, at the table in the corner

I replay the mind games, where she slays
Where her movement is there in time
Soft skin, wrapped around the sounds of violin
Let me leave you now, to go become the loner

Twisted scarf, tied up hair, arm that moves
With thoughts so fair; should I stay, fill my coffee
To the brim, ask: are you my sweetest Rose, or
Are you the unfaithful, faithless Desdemona

It all adds up

I feel you in my bones
Your whole you
Unfolds within my body
I smile, as your thoughts
Play with those in my mind
In this there becomes
A new entity
An entirety; more than one
With faith enough to move on
Courage gathered to go forwards

I cannot physically
Embrace you; not in
A screen filled photograph
I cannot chase you down
The sepia tone path
I no longer expect
Special journeys
Into the supernatural
Although we once believed
In the power of transference
Didn't we? Didn't we?

The pampas grass
Is blown vigorously
In this the windswept
Stormed & saturated
North of England

Not as the calm palms
Of the warm sunshine
Island’s waterfront
Where the promenade
Once walked with me

Recovery

Sit, settle; take a while to relax
Embroiled so to speak

A cacophony of human voices
To still the aches
Of this once-more human

Movie Tone

Snowflakes, bamboo leaves raked
Flames set to burn the big house down

The stakes are risen higher
With pyre of unfamiliar faces
Races on the intoxicated flyer
Shy times in the distant colony

Stop it, stop it; stop this nonsense
Did you not feel it in those moody eyes
Did you not see it in those smiling eyes
Did you not catch it in those guilty eyes

He takes her, she prizes the lyre
His twitch slices the stuttered paces
Laces of rum for our ever evil sire
Cries of madness; instant felony

Ashes, floats of paper debris flaked
Sound frames of reference, uncoupled

In a book

Eight days ago
Butterflies in profusion
A warm calm
The end of an Indian summer

Today the gulls battle the wind
As if maniacs in flight
Who knows their destination, or
Understands there sense of reason

Yesterday; fire and snow
Love, with infatuation
& snippets
Of a vagrant poet’s words

Before that there was long ago
Humans with spoken stories
Of cold indeterminate struggles
At the beginning of civilisation

Offspring

He is a part of you
A part of you
That I hold
That I hold on to

Unusually a pleasure
Occasionally
He’s mildly combative
Always more personable
Than I could ever be

That he is attractive
Is such a treasure
For I, at my age
Can see it could well last
Beyond all of my forevers

& because he still loves you
(I assume so)
I might replay that love
Better that, than never so

Pure Oxygen

Other breaths are drawn
Where once we drew breath
Other favours fawned
Where once we made nests

Storm clouds at dawn
Tinged by the sunrise
Our paths shaved forlorn
Never to receive those eyes

Out into the pink and blue
Shears of brilliant hue
Heightened illumination
Foils of a storms formation

Such wild torrid heavens
Rampant as once of love
Glows of favoured crescents
Giants in lost worlds above

Our flames fuel the forges
Steps to furnaces in hell below
Fall back to say you're gorgeous
To part was a magnificent sad blow

Sugar Rush of Doubt

He looks out upon his woods
A clear view
From the cottage bedroom window
He tiptoes barefoot
Over her newly fitted carpets

I drive a little faster
In a mood of abject darkness
I hold a tight grip on the wheel
Of my gathering nervous self. I drive
Doubtful across the vast suspension bridge

The boy surely meant no harm
His, a simple & innocent response
To one well experienced
In misunderstanding the use
Of well chosen, yet ambiguous words

Anyway why should I second guess
Of that which is only vaguely true
Why I could end up, down there
In the swelling brew; wide of the mark
I might be a goner & still be so far askew

Storm Psychology

Woken
By the tearing wind
& the driving rain

As if unspoken
The midnight of truths
Race around to stain

Stain this once youth
Whose three score years
No more remain

His image left
On the tails of winds
Amidst the thrusts of pain

He’ll restrain
From being uncouth
If that's all the same

Yet the stories
Of his tainted fruits
Surely lead to shame

If only to explain
Of himself
Who was he to blame

Laying there unrestrained
In the tearing wind
& the driving rain

Curvature

Hand placed softly
Upon your bare shoulder

Fingers stroke breathless
Along your delicate blade

Palms eased gentle
To cup your bosom

Mind strays awhile
Plays with yesteryear

Recoil

I stare over my coffee cup
Take care not to mix you up
With some other me

I share your arm movement
Bare skin of singular intent
Meant for all to see

There is little now that stirs
I defer to my memory
Despair; flair is not to be

Rich

Lightless windows
At the end of the day
A strength of blue
Purpose made
For lovers at play

Play on the waterfront
Play in the drinkers bar
Play at the all-night discotheque
Before the moonlight arrives
With the morning star

Differing

See
Close up
See
Far away

See
All the flaws, the brushstrokes
See
How it glistens, the composite whole

Enter the storyteller, all turquoise & jewels
Towing a casket
& a cast
Of one hundred thousand children

Hist

Words in Amsterdam
With this land, far and
Away from Zen, a place

Of smoke and mirrors
With houses that stand
No, lean; front to back
Side to side; five, six
Seven stories high

Another city centre tram
The praying mantis is
Judaism’s crossed brethren

This hall of talk and jitters
Where tales of remand
Mean leave some slack
Take a ride; jive, fix tricks
Heaven’s door is nearby

Less clear
The beer
In the restaurant

No fear
We have taken
Our photographs already

On Landing

Is there phlegm when you cough
The doctor asked
Are there bicycles
In Amsterdam
I should have said

Is the warm head
Another sign
Of my illness, or
Do the busy places
Always burn so brightly

Vacation’s Begin

Talk is of snowboards
Skateboards without wheels, offers
The grey haired older man

Father
Of the middle aged son
Who is doing most of the talking

Utah we hear is a good place
I therefore presume that these folks
Are related to the founding fathers

Descendants
Of those earlier Boston pilgrims
Otherwise why be in Humberside Airport

Before love heads homeward

The silence of symbiosis carries me
I float in and out of presence
I lose conscious weight
Through acts of unconscious removal

I take hold of sense
Intense with sensibilities
The light fades
My warmth wraps me

Good thoughts sprinkle their dust
It is the all of all oneness
The I that is able to reconnoitre
To have discourse with the wider world

The word I chose was egress
The word you chose was egret
Both had a part to play in departure
Both played some part in recovery

Fortune favours those who depart
Whether with will or without
Fortune plays her part
As they sit on the cill

In search of all but what love doubts

Shades

The words they choose
May be from a wider vocabulary
Possibly carry more gravitas
Yet as this day draws on

I believe that my words
Are for our solace (yours and mine)
& that this truth
Goes for the both of us

Solitude No More

You think I want to be here alone
I want to say that isn't true
The reason that I'm here at all
Is because I want to be here
Today, with you

Love’s silence out across the sound

Past Benbecula airstrip
My mind trips into the past
Your lasting impressions
Stress the importance
Concordance of memory

Island waters: seas, lochs, streams, waterfalls
The poet’s father’s daughter plays the pipes and all
All to have a calling, from the birth date to the wake
Words that stall, fall short of deep within
Rhythms of the oceans & of the seven deadly sins

Sunlight on the ferry
As for the boys in France
Back to making merry
Lead the nearly men a nearby dance

Tall ships and seaborne warriors
Divers for the crab and clam
Hear the anthems of the Highlands
Fire the fear and then be damned

Dream of wide open moorland
Sleep on thoughts of mountain tan
Lay down old preoccupations
As you would in far away Japan

Don’t be the author with his hari-kari
Turn the pages, become the love that can
